Project Overview
The Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is developing a new patient unit that will provide the Trust with increased chemotherapy capacity and the biggest Phase I clinical trials unit in the world. It will also include a state-of-the-art private patients’ unit which will support the NHS by investing profits back to further improve NHS services.

CPC’s Role
CPC was commissioned to undertake the Preliminary Review and subsequent Detailed Review / Business Case for Trust approval. CPC was responsible for the project management of the development during preparation of the Detailed Review. This included the establishment of project structure, reporting and governance arrangements with both internal and external resources.

CPC was responsible for liaising with the key stakeholders to develop an affordable scheme which incorporated the requirements for service chemotherapy provision, clinical trials facilities and a private patient unit. A significant amount of space dedicated to shared accommodation was included to utilise the footprint efficiently.

CPC was also responsible for the assessment of decanting operations to ensure operational continuity on the hospital site. As the project had two distinct elements, there needed to be an objective lead on priorities. CPC helped develop the options available to the Trust and facilitated the options appraisal workshop.

Client Benefits
The Trust was able to progress the DCU project significantly and develop executive board papers to cover the requirements of the regulatory body, Monitor. Key areas of concern at project level were highlighted and raised at Director level for immediate direction and guidance.

A risk assessment and an inter-project dependencies review was undertaken to provide the executive board with information regarding the DCU project development in relation to the overall programme of activity. Following approval the Trust commissioned CPC to lead the Project Management of the scheme throughout the detailed design stage.
