New Build Medium Secure Unit
Client:
Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust
Value: £16m
Duration:
2002-2004
Project Overview
This new unit provides a 64-bed inpatient accommodation along with outpatients and occupational therapy departments. The design provides secure, open spaces incorporating several courtyards and includes features such
as an art studio and sports facility for patients use.
This project included several significant elements of infrastructure including:
• Demolition
• Service diversion
• Site remediation
• Extensive roadworks
The design and construction elements
of the project had to give great consideration
to the existing mental health facility operating
on the site with the safety and welfare of the patients being paramount throughout.
CPC’s Role
CCPC were responsible for preparing the Full Business Case for this project that secured funding from the Welsh Assembly for the initial
50 bed scheme. Additional funding was secured from SIFT for the further 14 beds. Due to our performance at this early stage of the project
we were given the role of project manager
to deliver the design and construction phase
of the project.
Client Benefits
The new Medium Secure Unit created on
the Glanrhyd Hospital site provides a modern, state-of-the-art means of offering rehabilitative treatment to the patients in a secure, caring, purpose built environment.
Building Better Healthcare Awards 2004
CPC was highly commended for its work on this project
in the category 'Best Designed Mental Health Facility'.
The Caswell scheme
is now being cited
in the re-written
NHS HTM (health technical memoranda) and HBN (health
building notes) associated with medium secure units.
