Hayward Gallery - Southbank Centre London
Client: Southbank Centre
Value: Ł1m - £4m
Duration: September 2009 - May 2010
Project Overview
The Hayward Gallery is one of London’s most important spaces for displaying contemporary art. The gallery was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1968 and is an outstanding example of sixties brutalist architecture. One of the few remaining buildings of this style, it was designed by a group of young architects and is named after the late Sir Isaac Hayward, the former leader of the London County Council.
Having been constructed in the 1960’s certain elements of the building’s structure and infrastructure are reaching the end of their serviceable lives. The project therefore looks to identify these items and prioritise their renewal or replacement in line with available funding streams. The strategic project goal is to ensure that visitors to the gallery are able to appreciate artworks under the best possible conditions.
