Low Emission Zone
Client: Transport for London
Duration: January 2006 - ongoing
Project Overview
In early 2006, a public consultation took place on revisions to the Mayor of London’s Air Quality and Transport strategies regarding the principle of introducing a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in London. That consultation showed strong public support for a London LEZ.
The objectives of the proposed Low Emission Zone (LEZ) are two-fold:
• To move London closer to achieving national and EU Air Quality objectives.
• To improve the health and quality of life of people who live and work in London, through improving air quality.
CPC’s Role
CPC consultants are currently involved in the planning, design and development of an Impacts Monitoring System for the proposed London Low Emissions Zone (LEZ). This activity is a key component of the analysis, modelling and forecasting for the LEZ scheme, for TfL Strategy and Policy, and TfL Traffic & Technology.
CPC consultants are also currently involved in the planning and, subject to Mayoral approval of the scheme, deployment of the Enforcement Infrastructure for the proposed London Low Emissions Zone (LEZ).
Benefits
The LEZ is a wide area scheme affecting predominantly commercial parties which seeks to bring about health benefits though the elimination of certain vehicles from the road. It is intended to force compliance and therefore benefits are realised not through direct revenue but indirectly through improved health and quality of life.
