Community Cohesion Profiles

The Commission on Integration and Cohesion was set up following the London bombings in 2005. It was not focused on work to prevent extremism, instead the Commission looked at local and practical ways to build cohesion.

The Commission defines community cohesion as:

“what must happen in all communities to enable different groups of people to get on well together. A key contributor to community cohesion is integration which is what must happen to enable new residents and existing residents to adjust to one another.”

CPC can undertake, on behalf of local authorities and its partners, a local cohesion mapping exercise to produce a community cohesion profile. This is generally accepted good practice, reflects previous guidance and is something many local areas already do. Community Cohesion Profiles can act as both a baseline from which an area can measure progress on issues around community cohesion in the future and as an evidence base from which strategy can be developed.
